Gentian violet to Glass

Gentian violet: A dye belonging to the rosaniline group with antibact~rial, antifungal and anthelminitic properties.
Gentianose : A trisaccharide, occurring in the rhizomes of gentian. Gentiobiose: A disaccharide occurring in amygdalin glycoside, consisting of two glucose residues bound by a 1-6 linkage.
Gentiopicrin: A bitter, crystalline glycoside from gentian root. Gentisin: Acompound isolated from gentian.
Genus: A group of species.
Geometric isomer: A type of stereoisomer in which a chemical group or atom occupies different spartial positions in relation to the double bond.
Geraniol: A monoterpene alcohol, colourless to pale yellow, liquid oil, pleasant odour, used in perfumery.
Geriatric: Relating to the treatment of the aged.
Geriatrics: A branch of medicine which treats all problems peculiar to old age and aging.
Germ : A pathogenic micro­organism.
Germicidal: A substance that destroys germs.
Germicide: An agent which destroy~ pathogenic microbes. Germination: The sprouting of a seed or spore or a plant embryo. Gerocomia : The hygiene of old age. Gestagen : Any hormone with
progestational activity.
Gestagenic : Inducing progestational effects in the uterus.

Gestation: The period of development of the young in viviparous animals, from the time of fertilization of the ovum until birth.
Gestosis : Any toxemic manifestation of pregnancy. Giantism: Excessive size, as of cells or nuclei.
Giardia lamblia : A species that may cause giardiasis in humans.
Giardiasis: An infectious disease of the intestinal tract caused by flagellate protozoa Giardia lamba causing intermittent diarrhoea and malaborption.
Gibberallin : A group of plant growth regulators which promotes elongation of shoots.
Gibbs-Hemottatz equation: An expression of relationship of chemical energy transformed and the maximum electrical force obtained in a galvanic cell.
Giddiness (Vertigo) : A condition in whicb the affected person loses the power of balancing himself and has a faIse sensation.
Gigantism: Abnormal overgrowth. Ginger: The root of Zingiber officinalis, used to treat colic and tlatulence.
Gingiva: That part of the oral mucosa overlying the crowns of unerupted teeth and encircling the necks.

Gitaligenin : The aglycone of gitalin.

Gitalin: A crystalline cardiac glycoside from the leaves of Digitalis
purpurea.
Gitaloxin: A cardiac glycoside from Digitalis purpurea.
Gitogenin: A sapogenin from gitonin.
Gitoxin : A cardiac glycoside of Digitalis purpurea.
Gizzard: A portion of the digestive tract specialized for the mechanical breakdown of the food.
Glabrous: Smooth and bare; without hair, bristles or scales.
Glacial: (1) Resembling ice. (2) Highly pure form of some acids. (3) Acids having a freezing point slightly below the room temperature, e.g., glacial acetic acid crystallizes at 16.6°C.
Glacial acetic acid: Concentrated acetic acid which looks solid glass-like when congealed.
Gland: An aggregation of cells, specialized to secrete materials not related to their ordinary metabolic needs.

of glandular tissue situated near a gland of similar structure.
- Adrenal gland: A flattened body situated at the cranial pole of each kidney.

Thyroid gland: A gland situated in front of the neck, secretes thyroid hormone.
