Pellagra: to Percolate

Pellagra: A nutritional disorder due to deficiency of niacin or failure to convert tryptophan to niacin and characterized by dennatitis, inflammation of mucous membranes, diarrhoea and psychic disturbances.
Pellagrin: A person affected with pellagra.
Pellet: A small unit of a light, bulky material compressed into any of several shapes and sizes like spherical or rectangular.
Pellicle: A thin skin or film, such as thin film on the surface of a liquid. Pellucid: Translucent.
Pelvic (pelvis) : The lower portion of the trunk of the body, bound by two hip bones, sacrum and coccyx.

Pentaerythritol trinitrate : A white powder with mild odour, used as an antianginal agent.
Pentamidine isothionate : A white crystaHine powder, used as an antiprotozoa1.
Pentane: CH3 (CH2h CH3, a colourless liquid with pleasant odour obtained from fractional distil1ation of petroleum.
Pentapiperide methylsulphate : A synthetic quaternary ammonium anticholinergic, used to treat peptic ulcer.
Pentazocine: A pain-relieving synthetic drug as effective as morphine but without its addictive properties.
Pentobarbital: A barbituric acid derivative, used as a sedative and hypnotic.

Pentosan : A complex carbohydrate (hemicellulose) present with the cellulose in many woody plant tissues, give five-carbon-atom sugars on hydrolysis.
Pentose : General term for sugars with five carbon atoms per molecule. Pentosemia : The presence of pentose in the blood.
Pentoside: A compound of a pentose with some other substances. Pentasuria : High level of xylulose in the urine.
Pentothal sodium: An ultrashort acting anaesthetic.
Pepper: The unripe fruit of Piper nigrum, used as a spice, has diaphoretic, carminative and gastric secretogogue properties.
Peppermint oil : Volatile oil obtained from the leaves and tops of Mentha piperita, has canninative, gastric stimulant and counter-irritant properties.
Pepsin: A ferment found in the gastric juice which digests proteins to yield polypeptides.
Pepsinogen: A zymogen secreted by chief cells, mucous neck cells and pyloric glands, which is converted into pepsin in the presence of gastric acid.
Pepsinuria : The presence of pepsin in the urine.
Pepstatin : A pentapeptide pepsin inhibitor obtained from several species of Streptomyces, used to treat gastric ulcer.
Peptic: Pertaining to pepsin. Peptic ulcer: Ulcer in the stomach and duodenum.

Peptide: (1)'A combination of amino acids by formation of amide linkages. (2) A compound of low molecular weight which yields two or more amino acids on hydrolysis.
Peptinotoxin : A poisonous intestinal product of imperfect stomach digestion.
Peptiiation : (1) Spontaneous dispersion of a precipitate on addition of a small amount of a fmely divided solid into a colloidal dispersion.
Peptone: A derived protein, or a mixture of cleavage products of protein, readily soluble in water.
Peptonuria: The presence of peptones in the urine.
Per: A prefix signifying complete or extreme, and denoting an element in compound in its highest valence state; presence of peroxy, -0-0-.
Peracetic acid: A colourless liquid with a strong odour, CH3COOOH.
Per-acids: Derivatives of hydrogen peroxides in which groups are attached to pair of oxygen atoms, -0-0.
Peracidity : Excessive acidity. Perception: The conscious mental registration of a sensory stimulus. Perchloric acid: A colourless, fuming, hygroscopic liquid, Ha04, used as an oxidizing agent. Perchloride : A chloride that contains more chlorine than the ordinary chloride.
Percolate: (1) To strain. (2) The process of extraction of the soluble parts of a drug by a liquid solvent. Percolation: The extraction of the soluble parts of a drug causing a
